Powder Bed Fusion of nickel-based superalloys: A review

Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) techniques constitute a family of Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, which are characterised by high design flexibility and no tooling requirement. This makes PBF attractive to many modern manufacturing sectors (e.g. aerospace, defence, energy automotive) where some materials, such as Nickel-based superalloys, cannot be easily processed using conventional subtractive techniques. superalloys crucial materials in engineering underpin the performance advanced mechanical systems. Their physical properties (high integrity at temperature) make them difficult process via traditional Consequently, manufacture nickel-based platforms has attracted significant attention. To permit wider application, deep understanding their behaviour relation needs achieved. The motivation for this paper is provide comprehensive review how parameters affect these, aid practitioners identifying shortcomings opportunities field. Therefore, aims research contributions regarding microstructure manufactured two principle techniques: Laser (LPBF) Electron Beam Melting (EBM). ‘target’ microstructures introduced alongside characteristics those produced process, followed an overview most used building well build quality inspection A evaluation properties, including tensile strength, hardness, shear fatigue resistance, creep resistance fracture toughness analysed. work concludes with summary tables data published on these serving quick reference scholars.
